Did you know blueberries and strawberries help your heart?

Did you know that eating blueberries and strawberries three times per week is great medicine for your heart? The fruity combination was uncovered by Dr. Eric Rimm who is an associate professor at the Harvard School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School.  In a 2013 study, Rimm and his team gathered data from 93,600 women, who, at ages 25 to 42, signed up for the Nurses’ Health Study. Over the course of 18 years, they reported how often they ate various kinds of food

Berries arose as a health defense factor. The women who ate the most blueberries and strawberries were 34% less likely to have suffered a heart attack during the study period than women who ate the least of these fruits.

How much berry consumption is needed for heart health?

Dr. Rimm said those participants who saw the heart benefits ate a half cup serving or more of blueberries or strawberries every week. While the study population was made up of young and middle-aged women, Rimm says the findings likely apply to everyone, including men.
