Florida blueberries take starring role in “Living Healthy” initiative

In April, Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam and other state leaders launched a “Living Healthy in Florida” campaign.

In a press release, Putnam said, “This initiative is the first of its kind to combine the resources of elected officials, state agencies, nonprofits and others in order to communicate consistent information to Florida’s children, families and senior adults on healthy eating, good nutrition and active living. Using peak harvest times as a guide, individuals and families can learn how to reduce grocery shopping budgets, prepare healthy recipes that are easy to make, and learn how to integrate fresh Florida produce into any meal.”

Florida blueberries are an important ingredient of the program and can be used in many recipes from breakfast, to snacks, to side dishes and sauces.  The 2020 blueberry season, which began late this year in March, is growing strong.  Look for this season’s harvest in grocery markets today with packages marked “Fresh from Florida.”
